This collaboration with rising talent Nessø showcases her knack for pushing creative boundaries while staying true to her signature style. We caught up with Avi to dive deep into the process behind ‘Bad Habit’, from its gritty basslines to the tension-packed drops, and how her evolution as a DJ and producer continues to shape her artistry.
Hi Avi Sic, how’s it going?
Hey, I’m great. Going full speed ahead into the new year.
‘Bad Habit’ marks your debut on Revealed’s What Ya Need label. How does it feel to hit this milestone in your career?
It’s awesome! Honestly kind of wild to be releasing with these labels that I’ve had on my bucket list for so long.
How did the collaboration with Nessø come about, and what made you want to work together on this track?
I had made this track that was really cool but I was having a hard time finishing it… I had heard a few of Nessø’s tracks and thought he might like it or have some feedback. We had been Insta friends for a bit so I reached out and he instantly loved the idea.
Can you walk us through the creative process for this track? What was your starting point?
I started this one with the bass synth idea. Really grimey bassline and some weird sporadic lead sounds. I built some drums and made a semi-outline of the arrangement. I then laid down the vocals. Everything was sounding pretty good but I didn’t know where to take it anymore. I was kind of stuck. I sent the project to Nessø – he cleaned up the arrangement, refined a bunch of the sounds and made the vision really come to life. He is a pro at sound design and mixing. And just like that we had a banger.
You provided the vocals for ‘Bad Habit’. What inspired that choice, and how did you approach curating and producing them to fit the track’s vibe?
Yes, this is my second release using my vocals. The first was ‘Disco Train’ with Kiro Prime which got signed to Spinnin’ Records and Robin Schulz’s Mentalo Music. I approached ‘Bad Habit’ in the same way. Once there was a general outline of the song and the groove I just freestyled some lyrics. I ended up using the hookiest one liners of that vocal session. After some processing, compression, and light use of AI they were sounding perfect. I then chopped up the lyrics and played around with the placement of the vocals. Making any song is really just about experimentation and seeing what sticks.
The tension-building and impactful drops in ‘Bad Habit’ make for an engaging listening experience. What decisions did you make when structuring and arranging the track to ensure it kept listeners hooked?
Nessø really helped with the arrangement and structure. He has a great ear for that, keeping the flow of the song strong. The tension in the builds was definitely a focus that we both worked on. As far as the drop hitting hard, we really wanted to keep it minimal, even a little Techno, but at the same time – engaging and full of surprises. I think that’s the special sauce. Surprise within the elements and also simplicity.
‘Bad Habit’ is such a high-energy track. What techniques or tools did you use to maximise its impact on the listener? Did you try anything new during the production process?
The process is new for every song I work on. I may use some of the same techniques but the experimentation factor is what makes each song unique and that’s just time in the studio. I’m not a fan of using the same sounds or drums or even something as small as the same kick – every song I make is completely individualized and has its own character..
How would you say this track reflects your artistic identity, and were there any elements you added specifically to stay true to your signature style?
Yeah I mean, the grimey bass – the strange leads, and the overall high energy are definitely a few core similarities that influence all my tracks across the board. I definitely used a few sounds specifically to fit into that same lane.
As someone known for bold, high-energy sets, does your experience as a DJ influence how you produce tracks like this?
Appreciate the compliment—thank you! I really do focus on my live set energy. And yes, absolutely. My experience as a DJ has been a huge influence on how I produce. Before I got into production, I spent years behind the decks, so understanding music structure, keys, and BPMs became second nature. When I stepped into the studio, those skills made it easier to translate ideas into tracks. I just had to focus on learning the engineering side of things to bring it all together. And because I play a lot of live shows, I get to test out my ideas in real time and make adjustments based on audience reactions. This has been instrumental to the quality of my tracks and how they translate into a live setting.
Where do you see your sound evolving next, and can we expect more collaborations like this one?
I’ve been experimenting with more techno sounds and high energy Bass and Tech House lately. The evolution continues! Nessø and I are actually working on two other collabs at the moment so stay tuned for those. I also have a few other collabs in the works with artists including AK Renny, Andrew Lux, Control Room and also a third one with Valy Mo. I absolutely love collaborating—it’s incredible to see what can come from the fusion of creative minds.
Finally, what’s next? Can you share how you plan to continue your artistic evolution and journey within Electronic Music?
Release wise, my next song comes out in early February with Hexagon. I have an official remix dropping after that for my friends Bexxie & Yurie and then my second release with What Ya Need will follow. So yeah, lots of stuff ahead that I’m looking forward to sharing. And of course – live shows every weekend.
