Berries: Watching Wax
Self-released
Out Now
London-based trio Berries release the lead single from their forthcoming eponymous album. If Watching Wax is anything to go by, it promises to be one worth waiting for.
Explaining the motivation behind the record, the band state;
“Watching Wax is about escaping your worries for the day and attempting to give your mind a rest. The lyrics touch on fears for our future selves, looming anxieties that you can’t suppress and the desire to have a perfect day without your daily stormy thoughts.”
Musically and lyrically, the song mirrors these conflicting states of stress and serenity perfectly. From the start, the incessant guitar creates a sense of tension which only increases as Holly’s edgy vocals are brought into the mix, the opening lines, ‘Stitched up suits, with a weathered look, rush by in waves of grey and blue,’ capturing the pressures and mundanity of everyday life.
The chorus has more of a feeling of defiance and Holly’s soaring vocal is distinctly uplifting, reflecting the hope that we can indeed achieve a higher plane, if only fleetingly. The wax imagery, be it a melting hot candle or a relaxing lava lamp, is in itself captivating as a metaphor for the ups and downs of our existence; ‘Watching wax as years will follow, brightening as it burrows, rising like a willow.’
Berries are a band bursting with ideas and possessing the tools to deliver them fully-formed on record. Angular, energetic, challenging and distinctive with a dash of humour thrown in for good measure, they certainly know how to hold the listener’s attention. Watching Wax acts as an intriguing introduction to their world for those yet to have the pleasure.
