Despite a promising welcome on the global front, #KatyCats couldn’t help Katy Perry‘s latest tune claw its way onto the American Hot 100.
After the ill-received rollout that accompanied Katy’s comeback single, ‘Woman’s World,’ hopes were undoubtedly higher for its follow-up ‘Lifetimes.’
Produced by Dr. Luke like its predecessor, the up-tempo tune seemed to be greeted with warmer reception thanks to many deeming it a ‘return to form’ for the Pop diva.
Peruse of the updated Hot 100, however, shows that initial critical reaction wasn’t mirrored by a commercial response as the August 8-released song missed the all-genre tally entirely – opening at #15 on this week’s Bubbling Under Hot 100 chart.
For context, “Bubbling Under Hot 100” is a listing designed to rank the top 25 songs that have accumulated noteworthy radio airplay, sales, and streaming stats but not enough to place within the top 100 most popular songs of the week.
While back-to-back Billboard bombs may cast worry about the expected commercial performance of the tunes’ parent album, ‘143‘ (due September 20), Perry mounting a massive tour and MTV Video Vanguard performance in the coming weeks could spell just the turnaround needed for the era.
