The past meets the future in our latest KLOF Mixtape, opening with The Standing Stones new single ‘Twa Brothers‘, on which Jem Finer’s hurdy-gurdy shredding and Alasdair Roberts’ vocals are combined to great effect by Jimmy Cauty’s (KLF) mashup production style to create a hyper-quantised dystopio-folk-horror soundscape, blurring the temporal zones of the songs’ ancient origins with the near future.

This sets the pace for what follows:

Two tracks from A Thousand Pokes, “the most potent expression of Stick in the Wheel’s yet. Their songs ring with the joy of specificity and detail, the ferocious joy of marginalised voices making themselves heard, the angry joy of people reclaiming their heritage.”

New music from Frankie Archer, Bridget & Kitty and avant-folk supergroup Shovel Dance Collective, all of whom are changing the way folk music is created.

Music from Jake Blanchard‘s Fermentation drenches us in a “wyrd bliss” offering a cosmic gateway to a track from Colours of the Night, the final studio recordings of deep, hypnotic Gnawa songs from the late, great Maalem Mahmoud Gania.

Respite and shade come from Seckou Keita, with a track from his new Homeland album, as well as Sally Anne Morgan and the late Jack Rose. Ambient layers float like morning dew courtesy of Resonant Bodies; artist and multi-instrumentalist Realf Heygate, aka Flaer, make a double appearance with tracks from their new EP Burrow that peels back the layers of myth and memory embedded in the English countryside.

There’s a double helping from Rónán Ó Snodaigh & Myles O’Reilly with music from their album The Beautiful Road-“a calmative, a sonic balm in times of literal and metaphorical noise, but also a reminder of the verve and the life that can still exist in music.”

There’s also new music from Viennese bass clarinettist Susanna Gartmayer and Stefan Schneider (Mapstation) from their experimental project SO SNER.
