Light Of Eternity bring the dark energy

The recent loss of Killing Joke guitar guru Geordie has left a huge hole in the musical landscape.

Where were we going to get our fix of dark brooding musical landscapes and filmic dark energy allied to the perfect groove? Killing Joke drummer, Paul Ferguson has stepped up to the plate with his new project to commandeer the space.

His space.

Light of Eternity is a musical collaboration/writing partnership which began in August 2023 with members Big Paul Ferguson (Killing Joke, BPF), Fred Schreck (The Ancients) and Pauly Williams (Chaos 8) and they know how to bring the darkness.

These tracks sound enormous.

The opening track ‘Edge Of Fate’ is the closest to the later period Killing Joke but with an added melodic brooding edge. The drums are as concise and powerful as you would expect, and there is a truly menacing keyboard that plays a horns from hell line hook that sounds like it was recorded at the gates of hell or at the walls of Jericho and hooks around the vocal that switches from an infernal intensity to that sort of richness that Hugh Cornwell had.

There may be a nod to previous projects, which, of course, they have every right to do, but they have also managed to add enough of their own DNA to the sound to make it totally stand out as its own piece. The potent power of the piece is like future metal, a post post punk landscape that also – like all the best rock music – has the dynamics of classical music in its noir flow.

The second track, ‘Explode’ zigzags in on a power riff that is like a cranked Led Zep on its max bench press with the sheer gonzoid power of the riff and another infernal keyboard horn line creating something startlingly original out of the apocalyptic boogie.

‘Lament’ switches the mood and is a beautiful piece that sounds like the closing credits of a Hollywood dystopia movie and proves that the band can stretch their sound into unlikely places, whilst ‘Tipping Point’ with its swirling keyboard and off-kilter riff chug is a slice of industrial stadium rock that Ramsstein have made a career out of (after the German band had immersed themselves in Killing Joke of course).

Light Of Eternity perfectly soundtrack these dark energy times. Their muse seems to feed on the terror headlines and dystopian madness of the 21st century and they turn it into huge slabs of shadowy sound that sounds like a Hans Zimmer on steroids and a diet of dark media.

If this is the end of times, I think we have found the soundtrack, and it sounds great…
