Mixtape: KLOF No. 43 (Experimental, Ambient, Folk)

Most of this week’s KLOF Mixtape features new releases, some of which we’ve recently covered, including the latest singles from Natural Information Society & Bitchin Bajas and more eaze & claire rousay.

There are tracks taken from several new album releases: Rami Atassi & Caleb Willitz‘s Fits and Starts (review), Daniel Bachman‘s Moving Through Light (review), and Liam Grant‘s Prodigal Son (review).

There’s also new music from Pink Must (Mari Maurice Rubio, more commonly known as more eaze and Lynn Avery aka Iceblink); Félicia Atkinson‘s new album Space As An InstrumentYo La Tengo‘s Old Joy (the soundtrack to Kelly Reichardt’s film starring Will Oldham), and Myles O’Reilly‘s latest collection of sonic soundscapes, Together On The Slow Tide – all proceeds from the album will go to Social Action for Women (SAW), an organisation providing shelter, education, healthcare, and legal aid to Burmese women and children displaced by war.

You can also hear a track from Berangere Maximin‘s 2008 debut Tant Que Les Heures Passent and we turn back the clock to 1975 for Ernest Hood‘s incredible Neighborhoods album, remastered by Freedom To Spend in 2019:

Ernest Hood’s Neighborhoods was released some two decades after the Portland, Oregon born and raised musician’s first forays into field recordings. These very recordings, and those captured over intervening years, define the universal sound and aural images of childhood, a theme memorialized by Hood’s privately-pressed opus of 1975.

Freedom to Spend has restored Ernest Hood’s nostalgic masterpiece with the same care with which he viewed his source material, offering a remastered version of Neighborhoods transferred from the original tapes, expanded across four vinyl sides (the original version was crammed on two). The new edition reproduces Hood’s celebratory liner notes in full, alongside new liner notes by Michael Klausman.

On the track ‘Gloaming’ which plays out the mix, Hood shares:

Just after sundown, not quite dark. Swainson’s thrush and real horseshoes. Grandpa and Grandson (actually my own 91/2 year old, Garth) talking on the front porch. Little tyke rollerskating, a four year old girl singing nonsense lyrics to ‘Battle Hymn of the Republic’ (actually my own daughter 1958).
