Mixtape: Lost in Transmission – Episode 106

The latest Mixtape in our Lost in Transmission series may prove to be the perfect anecdote for those wanting a lift right now.

It opens to South London-based musician and sound artist Alice Boyd, who is set to release her second EP, Cloud Walking, on Thursday, 28th November 2024. The project draws deeply from her experiences on a recent journey into Scotland’s Cairngorm Mountains, retracing the footsteps of pioneering Scottish nature writer Nan Shepherd (1893-1981).

Midwinter Swimmers‘ is the title track of The Innocence Mission‘s new album. Karen Peris tells us is about missing a loved one who is away, and of how love can transcend distance. Taken from his recently announced new album ‘End of the Middle’, we have Richard Dawson‘s new single ‘Polytnnel‘.

Ahead of its release tomorrow (pre-save here), we have Welsh beatmaker Don Leisure‘s new single, Cynnau Tân (‘Light A Fire’) – featuring fellow countryman Carwyn Ellis (Colorama). Don gets the opportunity to not only pursue his fascination with Welsh psychedelic folk music from the mid-20th century by digging into Sain Records archives but also to place his signature, unparalleled and unpredictable skills to work. With a larger project on the horizon for 2025, this single shines a light on some uncovered gems from an inspiring but often overlooked body of work.

From our recently reviewed and recommended, we have: Fionn Regan (O Avalanche), Andrew Tuttle & Michael Chapman (Another Tide, Another Fish), Constant Follower (The Smile You Send Out Returns To You), Nev Clay (So Little Happened For So Long), Kevin Fowley (À Feu Doux), Angeline Morrison (OPHELIA), J.R. Bohannon & Dave Shuford (Reclined in the Haze) and Glåsbird (Fenscapes).

You can also hear new music from Jennifer Castle, taken from her new album Camelot (review up tomorrow); Cocanha’s latest single; Lee Baggett‘s feel-good Waves for a Begull–”a guitar-fueled journey packed with fuzzy riffs and jams thicker than coastal fog”; Anna ButterssMighty Vertebrate–their debut album for International Anthem; and Charles “Poppy Bob” Walker‘s Dirt Bike Vacation (via Worried Songs Records – Bandcamp), which explores Walker’s sonic world through a captivating set of instrumental songs made in the mid-1980s.
