In his review of Myriam Gendron‘s Mayday, released earlier this year, Thomas Blake concludes: Myriam Gendron’s art, for all its surface simplicity, harbours a wealth of emotional and aesthetic complexities which, when taken together, form a wholly unique sound. Mayday is the most moving and persuasive example of that sound to date.
Those emotional and aesthetic complexities come to the fore in her intimate performances. One of which has been beautifully captured by Toronto-based artist Colin Medley as part of his Memo series. This spontaneous performance by Gendron in her kitchen highlights Blake’s comments:
“She doesn’t rely on fireworks. Her singing and guitar playing is entirely devoid of gimmick. There are no cheap tricks, no bones thrown to the too-casual listener, but neither does she draw you in with difficulty or with discordance.”
The results, shaped by subtlety and beauty, are powerful.
Gendron will be touring Canada, Europe and the UK this fall, including solo performances at Le Guess Who Festival, Blue Bird Festival and more.
