Already covered in Lounder Than War back in April when they supported House of All in Manchester, things have been moving quickly for Hungry.
The band, originally from Cambridge, made the smart move to Manchester in September 2022, which feels and sounds like their spiritual homeland and already feel very much part of that city’s fervent indie culture.
Fronted by the gangling Jacob Peck, they ooze a high-IQ charisma and have the songs to back it up. Blasts of punky energy and jangling indie smarts make their songs insatiably catchy and full of the classic Manchester indie game changers from the super smarts of the Smiths, the propulsive and the rest of the hefty northern indie vinyl seven inch collections but very, very much on their own terms.
Far from wallowing in the past, Hungry have immersed themselves in the classics and plotted their own route out, and vamped up the much-loved hallmarks for the now. No one owns this stuff, and it is free to be remoulded for an ever-changing present. Somehow, they don’t sound retro but very much of the moment. There is a deep intelligence at play here, shards and snippets of lyrical smarts and a penchant for hooky guitar lines and choruses that will make small clubs sweat and, by next summer, festivals leap around. They are one of those bands that are a magnet and a pied piper for another generation. This is the sound of a new now, and the band’s energetic propulsive live shows are delivered with an intense whirlwind of energy that has seen them grab a fervent live following. They have released a clutch of singles like ‘Go Steady’ and the sprightly indie guitar shimmers of ‘Love Is War’ or the fab punky indie rushed of ‘On Sight’ or ‘The Jig’ – they all sound like indie hits with Peck’s poetic post sprechgesang plus vocals and some great playing from the band but the proper action is about to start now…stay tune and stay hungry.
They are quite definalty on the fast lane for the next gang of indie hopefuls taking the scene by storm.
