Telebox: When Night Turns Into Day

Ireland-based quartet Telebox has released a vibrant new five-track EP, When Night Turns Into Day, showcasing their post-punk-come-alt-rock tendencies. From moments that straddle swirling psychedelic-indie-rock to others that bring an atmospheric shoegaze emotion, the EP highlights the depth of the quartet’s songcraft.
Opening with the swirling guitar strums and synths of Pilot, the EP sets an atmospheric tone before the track picks up steam with a driving drum beat, strummed guitar, and fuzzy lead guitar line.
Developing through spacious delays, the track evolves into buoyant melodies, bringing a youthful indie flair through the verse. Changing again, the atmospheric floating auras come to the fore in the grungy, messy, and expressive half-time chorus. Exemplifying the band’s creativity, the spacious sound palette and fluidity to move between tempos give the track an experimental aura, while the poetic yet relatable lyricism provides an accessible focal point.
Elsewhere on the EP, House On Fire highlights the more alternative side of the band’s sound with beautifully constructed, intricate guitar work and melodic vocal lines comparable to Jeff Buckley. Tight yet raw and messy, the band’s sound is at once youthful and free, yet also considered, mature, and emotionally attuned.
Following The Night showcases more of the band’s unbridled rawness. Using urgent, angsty, raspy lead vocals, the musicianship captures the energy of the band’s live sound, as angular guitars move around the driving bass and drums.
As the EP heads into its final flourish, Glow takes a more gentle approach with a sense of considered and atmospheric beauty. Leaning further into the melancholic shoegaze side of their sound, the track delivers Slowdive-esque reverb-drenched guitar lines that grow around atmospheric swells, bass harmonies, and understated drums. Building throughout, the track ends with a spine-tingling, climactic final chorus as layers of vocal and guitar melodies overlap in a stunning wall of emotive noise.
Closing with the EP’s highlight, Berlin, all of the band’s varying elements come together on a track that amplifies the post-punk undertones in the bands sound. Tight, complex bass lines underpin the gradually growing drums, distortion- and reverb-drenched guitars, and half-spoken, one-note vocals that gradually rise as the track builds tension, with a delivery comparable to Thom Yorke on Radiohead’s Jigsaw Falling Into Place.
Building throughout, the track ends with an explosive guitar-led climax as the drums smash cymbals and the vocals offer a melodic chant. Ending on an infectious final riff, the EP rings out into the abyss.
Dark yet youthful and fun, messy and raw yet intricate and considered, When Night Turns Into Day is a brilliant display of what Telebox is capable of and sets the bar high ahead of future releases.
