Throat share new track and video ‘Dead Cars’

Last month, we shared the first offering from Throat, the new musical partnership between Mark Mckowski (The Lost Brothers) and Nick Power (The Coral). Their self-titled single skirted the borderlands of psychogeography, and the accompanying video by Devin Morgan and Eddie Levine was ingenious (watch it here). Today, they continue that ingenuity with the pensive lullaby, Dead Cars, coined as “a northern-Irish blues in e-minor for the Ceefax generation”. The accompanying video was directed and filmed by James Slater whose Hi-8 camera gives the whole thing a retro and ominous feel.

Dead Cars is a cowboy’s lament delivered alone on a deserted speedway track in the wee small hours. Official statement from Throat HQ on Dead Cars:

“We were trying to express the total freedom and joy at driving dead-end cars around dead-end towns at midnight and being invisible to everyone except us and our travelling companions. Dead Cars is a paean to lonerism, a northern-Irish blues in e-minor for the Ceefax generation. Think Riders on the Storm if The Doors had been on the dole or Springsteen’s State Trooper driving a lone scrap metal truck across the winding hills of County Tyrone – he knows who the Zodiac Killer is, because a stray psychic Labrador has been giving him messages from Merseyside the past week. Who cracked the case? THROAT.”

The video for Dead Cars was directed by James Slater and features world champion drag car racer Tricky Ricky. Director James Slater on Dead Cars:

“I packed my old Hi-8 camera and took the rattler up to Kings Lynn, home of Trackstar Racing where I would meet the enigmatic Tricky Ricky, a banger racer from Gravesend who was to compete in the 2Litre World final. I strapped my camera inside his silver topped Mondeo, presumably given a last minute reprieve from the scrap yard to be awarded one last moment in the sun – a 20 lap race for glory round the dust bowl. As he took to the car with a hammer and blowtorch to make some brutal  last minute alterations, tractors were towing the mangled corpses of what used to be hatchbacks and little run arounds back to their pits. Ominous omens of what was to come. The voice called out Ricky’s number. I pressed record and wished him and my camera all the best.”
