Watch the video for ‘Exploding Tetris’, David Grubb’s new single. The song is inspired by the phenomenon known as Exploding Head Syndrome, which occurs during the transition between wakefulness and sleep.
We recently premiered a video for Daily Grind by Wales-based Scottish musician, string-arranger, and composer David Grubb. The track was taken from his forthcoming concept album, Circadia (Friday, 13 September – Cambrian Records), on which, across 17 tracks, he explores a specific phenomenon experienced while asleep, such as false awakenings, nightmares, and lucid dreaming.
For his latest single, Exploding Tetris, we are transported to the hypnagogic phase of the album and treated to another exceptional live video performance filmed by Andrew Lawson of Fieldgate Studio. The performance features David on violin, Annie Perry on Clarinet, Corben Lee on Keys, Daniel Whitting on Electric Guitar, Aidan Thorne on Bass Guitar, and Jon Reynolds on Drums.
David on Exploding Tetris:
“At either end of the sleep cycle, there is a transitional state that bridges the conscious and subconscious realms: Hypnagogia (falling a sleep) and Hypnopompia (waking up). During this state a whole array of strange phenomena can happen. Exploding Tetris happens during the hypnagogic phase of the album, and combines two phenomena; Exploding Head Syndrome, and the Tetris Effect.
Exploding Head Syndrome: Sudden and intense noises or sensations that occur during the transition between wakefulness and sleep
Tetris Effect: A phenomenon where individuals who spend a significant amount of time playing a particular repetitive activity, begin to see patterns or images related to that activity as they are falling asleep
I imagine this track as an eternal battle to fall asleep, which I’m sure many can relate to. We sit in this limbo hypnagogic state, our brains working in overtime processing the day’s events, and as we are about to drift into a deep sleep… BANG! We’re jolted back into a semi-conscious haze and the process starts again. Back and forth we move between the playfully cheeky melodies of a busy mind and the alluring lullaby of slumber, until finally… BANG!
We are released.”
