Taken from his forthcoming concept album, Circadia (Friday, 13 September – Cambrian Records), and having previously premiered Exploding Tetris and Daily Grind, we have another video from Wales-based Scottish musician, string-arranger, and composer David Grubb.
Circadia is an instrumental concept album that explores the human subconscious and the sleep process. David shared the following on the latest album single, The Somnambulist:
“For this third and final single, we bring you from deep within the sleep cycle, during a period of slow wave, NREM sleep.
“Somnambulism, more commonly known as sleepwalking, is a parasomnia where one’s motor functions resume during an unconscious state. This can be as benign as talking, sitting up in bed, or walking around, but can be as extreme as driving, cooking, or acting out hallucinations. Often the walker is unaware of their actions during this state. It is still not fully understood why we sleepwalk.
“With the track, I wanted there to be an innocence with just a hint of malice to embody the mysterious nature of this phenomenon. We begin free and minimal, the clarinet depicting the body as it slowly becomes aware of its autonomy. As the body becomes more confident, more instruments enter, the violin responding to the clarinet as the mind tries to regain affinity with the body. We start to march, the band depicts the shuffling feet of the somnambulist, walking a tightrope between conscious realms. The clarinet soars wistfully as the body makes its way through the physical world, passing between melancholy and a sense of freedom.
“The track ends with a taste a what’s to come, something a little more sinister perhaps?.. You’ll have to listen to the full album on the 13th of September to find out.”
