At the end of May this year, the dexterously inventive Australian guitarist D.C Cross released his fifth album, Glookies Guit, which garnered plenty of praise from KLOF’s Glenn Kimpton in his album review:
‘Glookies is a more serious and no-frills record in the structure of the guitar playing, with Cross happy to allow the beauty of the tunes to shine. The result is undoubtedly his most accomplished work to date: a memorable acoustic guitar album.”
The album’s single extended piece was the eight-minute Rhinestones, in Black and White, which Kimpton describes as “lovely, with clear guitar notes bringing to mind a less intense Fare Forward Voyagers [by John Fahey]. I love the space in this piece, with the notes playing with the melody before locking in and delivering a patient, rhythmic song that is my pick of the bunch.”
This gem is being released today as a single and is accompanied by a short #youtubenewwave film, which Cross tells us is inspired by Wim Wenders, Better Call Saul and 90’s indie. Some of you may recall his excellent video for A Harebrained Adventure of An Amateur Shaman, which was directed by Steve Hanft. Here, he directed and filmed the short film noir style movie with/and JESSICA, who was D.O.P on the wonderful live guitar shots. I love the sense of timing, which accentuates the spaciousness of the tune, while the use of subtitles, colour and black and white scenes adds a little mystery. Like his music, he’s clearly put a lot of thought into the process.
Rhinestones, in Black and White, is also our Tune of the Day.
