Preston DIY crew Whinge release their debut single on Cracked Ankles Records and it’s only what you’d expect from the stable of Blizz.
Whinge are not fucking about with I Think I Found A Lump, diving straight onto the scene with a noisy racket that sounds dirty and sleazy. A searing two minute rant with scathing guitars, Lemmy-esque vocals with a Northern twang and balls out noise with lyrics that leave nothing to the imagination. The B side 6 Years is totally different with a repetitive Krautrock vibe full of psych that bursts into more searing guitars and a ripping bass line with tribal drums that beat the shit of you and blast the fuck out of your ears. The album is really going to confuse you let me tell you as they veer off in directions that are designed to baffle the ‘genre police’. A glorious debut from a slamming gang who Stoko (Cracked Ankles boss) says: “Basically they’re fuckin’ crackers” Check it.
About the group:
A meeting of four jaded old friends from the underbelly of the north-west music scene, Whinge began as a cathartic outlet and an attempt to press pause on the unrelenting passage of time. Fuelled by nihilism and a playful eye for self-deprecation, one pub conversation too many saw their myriad of musical backgrounds meet their unpredictable approach to life, with the end result: ‘Whinge’. Like the best bands; more a gang than a group.
Post-punk informed DIY garage-rock played with gay abandon, Whinge slam together influences from the Mondays to Sabbath, ESG to LCD, Genesis to the Rapture.
Playing with the likes of Benefits, LIFE, Part Chimp, BODEGA and many more; festival slots at Manchester Psych Fest, Waves Sunderland, Knockengorroch, Glastonferret among others; as well as running their own bi-annual mini-festival & celebration Whingefest; have all marked Whinge out as a force to be reckoned with.
Don’t argue with Whinge. Somethings quite not right…
