Best foundation for sensitive skin, tried and tested to suit your skin type

As sensitive skin types know all too well, even the most innocuous-seeming beauty product can leave our skin red, inflamed and irritated.

According to consultant dermatologist Dr Hiba Injibar from Dermasurge, “Sensitive skin can be caused by a variety of factors, including genetics, environmental factors and skincare products”.

While we may not be able to do anything about our genetics or environmental factors like pollution, we can curate an army of complexion-friendly products from the start to the end of our routines that will shield and protect our delicate skin. And this extends from the cleansers and moisturisers that we use, all the way to our makeup bag.

Foundation, in particular, is known for causing flare-ups. Dr Hiba Injibar reveals that this is on account of ingredients like “fragrances, preservatives and certain dyes”. She explains, “Products with fragrances are common culprits for causing skin sensitivities. Additionally, preservatives like parabens can also trigger allergic reactions in some individuals”.

To combat this, she suggests “reading the ingredient labels and performing patch tests if you have sensitive skin when trying out new makeup products to avoid potential sensitivities”.

What should you look for in a foundation for sensitive skin?

Sensitive skin types may have traditionally opted for mineral foundations in the past as they are typically free from the irritating ingredients of their counterparts, but there has been a transformation in the foundation space in recent years that has opened up the market.

While the powder mineral foundation, especially from bareMinerals, will always play a part in our routine, serum-foundation hybrids are taking over. Foundation formulas from the likes of Ilia, Kosas, Jones Road and It Cosmetics incorporate soothing skincare ingredients like hyaluronic acid and niacinamide that make them more easily tolerated by those with sensitivities.

“When choosing a foundation for sensitive skin, it’s important to look for products that are labelled as hypoallergenic and non-comedogenic to minimise the risk of irritation and breakouts”, says Dr Injibar. “Opt for foundations with gentle, soothing ingredients like aloe vera, chamomile, and hyaluronic acid to help calm and hydrate the skin. Additionally, choose a foundation with a lightweight and breathable texture to avoid clogging pores and aggravating sensitive skin”.
