Donald Trump was in the vicinity of shots fired while he was playing golf near his home in Florida.
The Trump campaign team made the claims on September 15.
“President Trump is safe following gunshots in his vicinity. No further details at this time,” Steven Cheung, his campaign spokesman said.
According to US outlet the New York Post, two people were firing outside the golf course in Florida, but they were not “targeting Trump”.
It has been claimed on X by a reporter at the scene that police arrested someone hiding in bushes.
Journalist Natalie Winters wrote on the social media platform: “Shots were just fired at Trump International Golf Course in West Palm Beach, Florida. Trump was there golfing. An AK-47 was discovered in the bushes and the suspect fled over a nearby wall, per a source in Florida law enforcement.”
The report has yet to be confirmed.
The U.S. Secret Service said in a statement: “The Secret Service, in conjunction with the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, is investigating a protective incident involving former President Donald Trump that occurred shortly before 2 p.m. The former president is safe.”
Sen. Lindsey Graham took to X moments after the news broke to praise the former president for his stoicism.
“Just spoke with President Trump. He is one of the strongest people I’ve ever known. He’s in good spirits and he is more resolved than ever to save our country.”
The former president was playing golf at his course in West Palm Beach when the firing broke out, it was reported. The course is a short distance from his Mar-a-Lago residence.
It comes two months after an assassination attempt on the Republican presidential nominee.
Gunman Thomas Matthew Crooks struck the 45th president in the year with a shot he fired during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13.
