The Prime Minister’s cruel policy will reduce the number of pensioners in receipt of payment by 10million from 11.4million to 1.5million.
While the government snatches money from pensioners, train drivers are up for an inflation-busting pay-rise.
Speaking on The Division Bell podcast, the Express’ Sam Lister points out the hypocrisy.
She said: “The government has chosen to give train drivers a 14 percent pay rise, which obviously is not going down well with those people who are struggling to make ends meet on 13, 000 a year, who are retired, who have no ability to earn any extra income.
“But you know, that’s a political choice that the government’s made now.
I don’t think that that will be something that pensioners forget very quickly, and that’s going to be something that dogs [Labour].”
Co-host Lizzy Buchan agrees that the policy will affect many.
She said: “This cut is going to affect 10 million pensioners who find life difficult.
“There’s lots of Labour MPs and Unions who are unhappy about this, but they are mostly willing to give the benefit of the doubt.”
She went on to say: “A lot of pensioners live in poverty.
“I don’t think there’s any political appetite to take that away or to make that any more difficult… there are people [in the Labour party] who are unsure whether this is a bit harsh?”
Documents leaked to the BBC show that Labour is trying to counter the backlash with a £400 annual boost from April, courtesy of the “triple lock” policy.
Sam said: “That 400 pounds that is the triple lock, it’s nothing to do with the Labour government. It was a Tory triple lock.
“In fact, it was a coalition triple lock. Let’s be clear. It was a Lib Dem conservative government that introduced the triple lock, nothing to do with Labour.
“It really does not counterbalance the fact that they’re taking off up to £300 off pensioners this winter at a time when bills are also going to go up by £150.
“Essentially, many pensions will be nearly £500 worse off.”
