A man has been charged by gardaà in connection with the fatal assault of an American man in the five star Ballyfin Demesne hotel in Co Laois on Tuesday night.
The suspect, who is in his 30s, was arrested at the resort on Tuesday night. He is also from the US and was due to appear before Portlaoise District Court on Thursday morning.
The victim was found unresponsive in a leisure area of the hotel just before 8pm and was in an unresponsive state having been injured in an apparent assault. While emergency services rushed to the scene, the injuries the victim sustained proved fatal.
The suspect in the case was also a guest at the resort and was known to the dead man. The crime scene was sealed off on Tuesday evening and examined by Garda forensic experts.
Detectives had been questioning the suspect since his arrest on Tuesday night and on Thursday morning the Garda confirmed a man had been charged and would appear before the courts.
The suspect was detained under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, allowing for gardaà to question him for up to 24 hours without charge, excluding breaks for rest and other matters.
