UK storms mapped as Britain faces lightning and huge downpours

A large portion of the UK will be hit with torrential rain with some areas expecting thunderstorms, new forecasts show.

Metdesk’s weather map predicts that some dreadful weather will hit the UK on Sunday evening before building momentum on Monday.

Cornwall and Devon will be the first to be hit on Sunday evening before, in the early hours of Monday, the forecast shows the worst of the rain falling on west and northwest Scotland.

But showers will also dampen the day for people in the northeast, northwest, and parts of the southeast of England.

The rain will stretch from the top of Scotland all the way down to near Oxfordshire.

Later in the morning, at 9am, the rain will remain widespread across the UK but the thunderstorms will have quietened down, the forecast says.

There will still be a hefty downpour in the centre of England, hitting Birmingham and moving up to Manchester.

This comes as the Met Office warns that hot weather and thunderstorms are both on the horizon.

Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist, Dan Holley, said: “We expect to see a relatively brief hotter and more humid spell of weather for Sunday and Monday, before these hotter conditions recede on Tuesday, allowing more unsettled conditions to return.

“This change to hotter conditions is caused, in part, by the effects of Tropical Storm Debby in North America. Debby is helping to strengthen the jet stream, causing it to meander over the Atlantic. This will allow hot air over France to move into the UK later this weekend, and early next week.”

Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist, Dan Holley added: “Along with the rise in temperatures, there is also an increasing threat of heavy rain and thunderstorms on Sunday night and into Monday.

“This looks most likely across portions of Wales, northern England, Northern Ireland and southern and eastern Scotland, but the advice is to keep up to date with the latest forecast and any warnings by checking our website or app.”
