Labour-Led Council Blocks Major Development Over Lack of Reused Carpets

A major development project in Shoreditch, London, has been blocked because of…its lack of recycled material in carpet tiles and other building items. Labour-led Hackney council have, in their infinite wisdom, unanimously opposed the £900 million project – which would include an 18-storey office building – over wails that the developers aren’t doing enough to go green. This is despite the developers planning on using half of the carpet tiles, plasterboard and blockwork with recycled materials…

Council officials lamented:

“While it is acknowledged that the opportunities for reuse of on site materials on the Hackney side are limited, it is considered that there is a significant missed opportunity by not committing to actively seek to incorporate reused materials sourced through local exchange material platforms.”

The GLA get the final say in whether this project, which would ultimately inject money into the local economy, goes ahead. Though judging by their track-record, it’s more than likely they’ll choose going green over growth. And Labour said they would target planning…
