Labour Offers Mauritius £18 Billion After Hermer Intervenes in Chagos Surrender
Downing Street did not at this afternoon’s Lobby briefing deny that Starmer is now offering £18 billion to the Mauritians in order to hand over the Chagos Islands, nor that British control over the lease has been weakened. UK Attorney General Richard Hermer met with the Mauritian Attorney General Gavin Glover on 16 January. They were accompanied by Overseas Territories minister Stephen Doughty. Hermer incidentally worked along with Chagos’ longtime chief legal counsel on the deal Philippe Sands at Matrix Chambers. The pair have signed multiple public letters together as part of legal campaigns – the latest was as recently as 2023. They worked together there for ten years – after Hermer moved from Keir Starmer’s Doughty Street Chambers in 2012. The deal still sits with Trump’s team after Starmer gave up on pushing it through before the inauguration. They are mulling a variety of options including buying Diego Garcia off the Mauritians. Which would be a tragicomic result as far as the UK is concerned…
