Keir Starmer’s chief of staff is drawn into Trump election interference row
“Donald Trump has accused two of Sir Keir Starmer’s most senior aides of “anti-American election interference” as part of a “far-left” bid to put Kamala Harris in the White House. The US presidential candidate mounted an extraordinary attack on Labour after senior allies of Starmer travelled to the Democratic National Convention over the summer. Trump also claimed that Labour had “recruited and sent party members” to campaign for Harris in an alleged breach of US electoral law. A hundred staffers and activists from the Labour Party have volunteered to campaign for Harris in swing states. Labour confirmed that it had paid for Morgan McSweeney, Starmer’s chief of staff, to attend the convention but insisted that he did not advise Harris’s team.” – The Times

Mounting speculation over Rachel Reeves coming Budget measures
“Pump Pain. Budget warning as Brit motorists are hammered with ‘highest fuel taxes in Europe’, analysis shows. This is despite the Sun’s Keep It Down campaign pushing ministers to keep fuel duty frozen for over a decade. At 53p a litre on average, UK diesel drivers pay 25 per cent more tax per litre than EU counterparts. Petrol users fork out two per cent more, says FairFuelUK. Chancellor Rachel Reeves is said to be considering a 7p-a-litre hike to help plug a £40billion black hole in finances. It would come from scrapping the temporary 5p cut and reinstating the annual fuel duty rise” —The Sun

Tory leadership debate between Badenoch and Jenrick on verge of collapse
“Plans for a head-to-head televised debate between the Tory leadership contenders Robert Jenrick and Kemi Badenoch are on the brink of collapse. Sky News, which offered to host a debate with an audience of Tory voters, has abandoned its plans after Conservative Party officials were unable to “reach agreement” with the rival camps. It follows the collapse of bids to stage leadership debates by the BBC on Question Time and The Sun, hosted by its political editor Harry Cole…LBC is understood to have made a late offer of a debate hosted by Nick Ferrari but with only seven days to go before the ballots close, the proposal is believed to be mired in a bureaucratic to and fro-ing that has scuppered the other offers.” – Daily Telegraph

Warnings of a shortage of armed police, as supporters of Chris Kaba face backlash
“All police forces have a shortage of firearms officers, police leaders have said, as the home secretary announced measures to protect marksmen from prosecution after the shooting of Chris Kaba. Yvette Cooper said that she would change the law to give anonymity to firearms officers facing trial for a shooting unless they are convicted. The threshold for prosecuting officers involved in shootings will also be raised and investigations will be sped up to prevent long periods of suspension from duty. However, Cooper has rejected demands from the Metropolitan Police commissioner, for officers to be exempt from criminal charges over fatal shootings unless prosecutors can show that they “deliberately departed” from their training.” – The Times

North Korean troops ‘desert Putin’s army before reaching front’ in Ukraine.
“North Korean troops scrambled to fight for desperate Vladimir Putin are reportedly fleeing from their positions before even reaching the frontlines. Thousands of soldiers from Pyongyang were reportedly deployed – with many more yet to arrive – deep inside Russia to help Moscow win its bloody war against Ukraine. What was a just speculation up until a few days ago has now become certain as top US authorities today confirmed North Korean military presence on the Russian side. They said at least 3,000 soldiers have put their boots on Putin’s land to receive military training before being deployed to the frontlines.” – The Sun

Football clubs will be forced to consult fans on ticket prices and stadium moves
“Football fans will get better protections from ticket price hikes and stadium moves under Labour plans to toughen up the game’s new proposed regulator. Clubs will now have to undertake “effective engagement” with supporters on ticket price hikes or planned stadium moves, with the condition forming part of new licenses for teams to operate that will be overseen by the watchdog. Sir Keir Starmer has also bowed to pressure from Uefa to remove a requirement for the new regulator to take into account Government policy when deciding whether to approve takeovers.” –The i

Stop putting the clocks forward to save our sleep, say doctors
“Many will be dreading putting the clocks back this Sunday, as it means the start of much darker evenings — although we will, at least, gain an extra hour in bed. Now, however, a group of doctors is calling for the government to abolish the biannual clock changes altogether, warning it is damaging the nation’s health. The British Sleep Society, a professional organisation for scientists and health workers, said the UK should retain Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) all year. They said that switching to British Summer Time (BST) at the end of March, then back to GMT at the end of October, disrupts people’s body clocks and damages their health.” – The Times
