Over the weekend the SW1 was abuzz with the rumour that Rishi Sunak could call an election this week as inflation and net migration figures are released. Despite the government’s slightly off expectation management of inflation figures – it’s higher than 2% – speculation of an election being called is swirling the Westminster rumour mill. A Sunak and Hunt media blitz combined with Tory peer Danny Finkelstein’s remarks last night that he “picked up a bit of talk in government circles” that Tories are thinking they might as well give the go ahead now given things are unlikely to get much better this autumn.
