Over the weekend the SW1 was abuzz with the rumour that Rishi Sunak could call an election this week as inflation and net migration figures are released. Despite the government’s slightly off expectation management of inflation figures – it’s higher than 2% – speculation of an election being called is swirling the Westminster rumour mill. Strike while the iron’s hot?

Ministers have been told not to travel today, and Sunak is holding a rare Wednesday afternoon cabinet meeting (courtesy of him having to dash off to Austria yesterday) and there’s chatter of Sunak clearing his diary today – though senior civil servants tell Guido this isn’t true. On the other hand, cabinet ministers have been told this morning not to expect anything big…

A Sunak and Hunt media blitz combined with Tory peer Danny Finkelstein’s remarks last night that he “picked up a bit of talk in government circles” that Tories are thinking they might as well give the go ahead now given things are unlikely to get much better this autumn. SpAds are unusually silent today – perhaps a reshuffle of sorts may be in play. Still, No10 were this morning sticking to the line that the election will be in the later half of the year.
