Tory Shadow Cabinet Meltdown Over Immigration Is Huge Boost To Reform
Reform has just published its latest Party Political Broadcast. It looks ahead to the local elections and voices the party’s concern that their performance will be meaningfully hindered by plans among some councils to delay their elections thanks to restructuring. A big threat to Reform’s narrative if things don’t go their way…
Meanwhile the official opposition is in meltdown with its first major Shadow Cabinet spat. Priti Patel’s claims on Never Mind the Ballots that the huge wave of immigration under the tories consisted of the “brightest and the best” and refusal to apologise went off Kemi’s party line. A Tory spokesman soon shot down the Shadow Foreign Secretary: “While the last Conservative govt may have tried to control numbers, we did not deliver.” Patel has now issued her own clarificatory statement on X:
“Our party is now under new leadership and it is important we learn from our mistakes and how we can do things better. As a former Home Secretary, I have seen no interest whatsoever from any other political parties in understanding the system or learning these lessons. I’m pleased the Leader of the Opposition and Shadow Home Secretary have said they will develop a new plan on how to control immigration, including a hard cap on visas. This is what is needed. More words will not solve the problem.”
A meltdown which will see Reform figures licking their lips. One Tory source tells Guido: “That Priti clip will be all over Reform ads in hours.” First rule of opposition: don’t issue shouty statements against one another…
