Lynched travellers: CDS squad goes after killers as Okpebholo speaks to govs.

In a dramatic turn of events in Edo State, authorities have detained 14 individuals connected to a deadly incident that claimed the lives of 16 hunters. The tragic event, which occurred last Thursday in Uromi, has prompted swift action from both state and national security officials.

A Tragic Day in UromiWhile en route to Kano from Rivers State to celebrate Eid with their families, a group of hunters found themselves targeted by a vigilante group. The vehicle carrying these hunters was forcibly halted, and the situation rapidly escalated. Misidentification led the vigilantes to believe the armed men were kidnappers, resulting in a brutal attack that left 16 hunters dead—many of whom were reportedly set ablaze. Fortunately, police intervention saved 10 individuals who were later rescued from the scene. The victims were given their final rites on Saturday.

Strong Condemnation from National Leaders

General Christopher Musa, Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, expressed deep sorrow and outrage over the incident. In a public statement, General Musa firmly condemned the extrajudicial killing and promised that those responsible would face full justice. He noted that the tragedy might have been averted if the proper authorities had been informed in time to verify the identities of the travelers.

General Musa also extended his condolences to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the families affected by the loss, and the broader communities impacted by the incident. He stressed the importance of relying on established security forces rather than resorting to vigilantism.

Government Response and Regulatory Actions

In response to the incident, Edo State Governor Monday Okpehbolo took decisive steps. The governor has suspended the Commander of the Edo State Security Corps, CP Friday Ibadin (retd.), and ordered the immediate shutdown of all unregistered vigilante groups operating in the state. According to Governor Okpehbolo’s administration, the vigilante group involved had no official registration with the Edo State Security Corps, which rendered their actions illegal and contrary to state policies.

The state government has been actively engaging with the families of the victims, community leaders, and officials in Kano—the home state of most of the deceased—to ensure that justice is served promptly and transparently.

A Call for Order and Accountability

In a detailed statement, the Secretary to the State Government, Musa Ikhilor, emphasized that the administration is leaving no stone unturned in its investigation. With 14 arrests made so far and a manhunt underway for additional suspects, local authorities are working closely with national security agencies to bring all perpetrators to account.

The government reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the constitutional rights of its citizens, assuring the public that measures are being put in place to prevent such tragic events from recurring.

The state Commissioner for Information and Communication, Paul Ohonbamu, also noted that proactive steps have been taken to reach out to the Hausa community, ensuring they are aware of the actions being taken to curb further violence.

A Wider Message from Community LeadersAdding to the call for calm, the 16th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sañusi II, addressed the community during the Eid prayer at Kofar Mata. He cautioned the youth against seeking revenge, reminding everyone that retributive violence only undermines justice and destabilizes society. His message resonated with many, urging the community to maintain peace and rely on the authorities to handle such sensitive matters.

Moving Forward

This incident has sparked widespread condemnation across various sectors—from state governments and lawmakers to community and religious leaders. The collective response underscores a resounding call for adherence to the rule of law, transparency in investigations, and a unified stand against unlawful acts by vigilante groups.

As the investigation continues, both state and national officials remain determined to ensure that justice prevails and that all measures are taken to prevent similar occurrences in the future.
