Tyler Perry’s ‘Duplicity’ Is a Confusing Mess

Tyler Perry has once again delivered a film that leaves audiences scratching their heads. Duplicity, now streaming on Prime Video, is a thriller that quickly spirals into chaos, weaving a convoluted web of deception and half-baked twists.

At its core, the film follows Marley (Kat Graham), a high-powered attorney taking on the biggest case of her career: the police shooting of her best friend’s husband. With the help of her private investigator boyfriend (Tyler Lepley), she uncovers layers of corruption and betrayal that complicate what initially seemed like a straightforward legal battle.

However, the film quickly loses its grip, trying to juggle multiple storylines that don’t fully come together. What starts as a legal drama morphs into something entirely different—almost as if two separate movies were mashed into one. The pacing is uneven, the dialogue feels forced, and by the end, you’re left with more questions than answers.

While the cast does a solid job, particularly RonReaco Lee, who steps out of his usual roles to play a compelling villain, the writing doesn’t give them much to work with. Perry’s tendency to introduce shocking twists without proper buildup is on full display, making Duplicity feel more frustrating than thrilling.

Perhaps the biggest issue is the film’s use of a police shooting as a mere plot device without meaningful commentary. It’s a serious topic that deserves depth, but here, it feels like an afterthought in a tangled narrative.

Ultimately, Duplicity is yet another example of Perry’s hit-or-miss storytelling—entertaining at times but largely incoherent.

If you’re looking for a thriller that actually makes sense, you might want to look elsewhere.
