Kate Young has released her new single ‘Mountain‘ and shared a visually stunning new video she made and co-directed with Ruth Barrie at Waltzer Films. Mountain, also our Song of the Day, the first single taken from her forthcoming new album Umbelliferæ, which she is touring later this year with an International string quintet from Austria, France and Slovenia, see dates below.
Kate Young: This film is about searching for something, in the landscape, in the environment, in ourselves. Contemplating the way things appear differently as the light shifts and changes, it was a pleasure to work with Ruth who helped dream this into being. We played and experimented – it was an adventure to make! Sewing a huge sheet bigger than my garden and setting up on a beach before dawn with no idea how the light would be… but I’m so proud to share the result with you.

Umbelliferæ
Kate has shared that the songs on Umbelliferæ “draw upon many herbalist’s accounts and folk stories about local wildflowers. More broadly, it is an album that is about our human connection to the land, what this means to live here as our home, and seeing plants as an active medium between it and ourselves.” She adds, “Umbelliferæ is the genus (plant family name) for the type of plants which spread their seeds through the wind like Carrot, Angelica, Cow Parsley, Sweet Cicely and so on. That is how I view this record – as I embraced the many-layered traditions of plantlore and ancient herbal traditions, I like to think of it as the music carrying messages of knowledge and inspirations about plants through the air.”
The album features some of Scotland’s most outstanding players:
Su-a Lee (cello)
Patsy Reid (viola)
Sofia Högstadius (violin)
Claudia Schwab (violin)
Corrina Hewat (clarsach)
Tim Lane (drums/percussion)
May Haliburton (double bass)
The record was recorded and engineered at Castlesound Studios, mixed and mastered by Oz Fritz (Tom Waits) in California. Produced by Kate, and some tracks co-produced by Leo Abrams (Brian Eno, etc).
