Kate and William’s ‘big school rule’ so their children feel like normal kids

There was something fascinating within the Prince and Princess of Wales’ video to announce the end of Princess Kate’s chemotherapy.

For all the abnormality of their lives, filled with global intrigue and public appearances, the video showed normality that we rarely see nor appreciate.

As Prince Louis climbed on logs, Charlotte played with cards and the future King and Queen laid legs intertwined, we caught a rare glimpse into a family who has been through a traumatic period of their lives in the midst of global spotlight.

But the normality is not something that should come as a surprise, as Princess Kate and Prince William have strived since they became a family to give their children a childhood as normal as possible.

Alongside protecting George, Charlotte and Louis’s privacy, one way in which the royal parents are achieving this is by sharing the duty of the school run.

The Daily Mail’s royal editor Rebecca English wrote: “Public appearances of the youngsters are made on their terms only, largely unannounced in advance, if and when the children feel comfortable.

“Indeed, where possible, at least one of the parents drops off the children at school each day, and both are frequently in attendance together on the sidelines at football and cricket matches, or cheering the ‘kiddies’ on in the pool or in dance recitals.”

The Prince and Princess of Wales’s children – George, Charlotte and Louis – are now in Year 7, Year 5 and Year 2 respectively at Lambrook School in Berkshire.

There, the children are not referred to by their royal titles, instead going by George Wales, Charlotte Wales, and Louis Wales, a nod to their parents’ titles given to them by King Charles following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II two years ago.

The same happened with Princes William and Harry who went by the name “Wales”, their father’s title throughout their school days and time in the military.

The efforts that Princess Kate and Prince William go to to provide some semblance of normality are often applauded and allow them to interact so effortlessly in videos such as the one released this week.

The rarity of seeing the royals relaxing like a normal middle-class family is a refreshing change as the Royal Family looks to change with the times, as suggested by a body language expert.

Judi James told Express.co.uk: “Often what the royals have been keeping masked from the public is drama, acrimony, marital splits or arranged marriages of convenience.

“Behind the closed doors of the Wales’s though there are clearly astounding amounts of fun, happiness and the strongest bonds of love.”
